Is it safe in the USA?

I'll be travelling on business alone in Nov to Los Angeles. I've heard colleagues telling me that it is not safe as a lady traveller to travel alone in the streets, do not go out at night etc. I do not wish to be paranoid hence i'd like your opinion,what are the things I can do to have a safe trip in the US? thanks!
