Guitar solos. How important are they to you? Are they as vital as the almighty riff?

They are very important in fact the whole grunge thing and alternative music scene took advantage of not having solos because the band members for the most part were not talented or musical enough to pull a great solo off. It takes years to learn guitar well enough to solo. The riffs are important because they set up the style of the solo.
